Chinatown will always be open, and with your support, we can create a more vibrant neighborhood to return to — one that takes the thoughts of local residents and businesses into consideration as Chinatown recovers and reemerges from the pandemic.

Welcome to Chinatown is here to uplift the stories of the local residents and businesses. We are here to listen and help them during this pandemic. That’s why we’re excited to launch Care for Chinatown, our neighborhood revitalization program to help freshen up and enhance Chinatown businesses while preserving its historic cultural footprint.

Chinatown thrives on creativity and culture; our neighborhood mixes old with new, and we take good care of our community while maintaining our identity. Care for Chinatown aims to revitalize growth following the impact of COVID-19 by helping Chinatown look and feel its best. A well-kept community supports economic development, a sense of identity, improves neighborhood perception from the inside out, and is inviting to residents and visitors alike.

Why we’re starting with murals

Chinatown has become a unique district with a ranging display of street art and murals that bring our neighborhood’s vibrancy to life. From projects like #88gates to @greetingstour, these creative works of art become a life size canvas for independent artists to show their love for Chinatown. In partnering with local illustrator and muralist Loe Lee, we hope to offer these murals as one way we can help Chinatown businesses freshen up their physical spaces to welcome back in locals and visitors alike and highlight all there is to love about our neighborhood through art.

According to research published by the Sign Research Foundation in 2012, 60% of businesses increased sales by an average of 10% after placing new signage, like large-scale pictures or wall murals. Though this study was conducted in 2012, there has been increasing news coverage recently on muralists around the nation covering closed shop fronts with uplifting and motivational art that helps bring color back to the neighborhoods.

Graphic illustrations have the ability to convey strong messages and emotions better than words. In the same spirit, murals give businesses the opportunity to tell a compelling and memorable brand story, and reinvent the way they promote themselves.

By partnering with Loe, Welcome to Chinatown helps carry out her vision of bringing back love and morale to the neighborhood through art that celebrates the culture and narrative of Chinatown. Loe will design and paint 10 custom murals: two murals for the Chinese American Planning Council (CPC) and eight for businesses in the community impacted by COVID-19. The murals will be at no cost to the business owners to promote their reopenings.

We need your help to raise $10,000 for Murals by Loe Lee to cover the cost of supplies. Loe has graciously donated her time and skills, and will consult with each business owner to create a mural representative of their business’ identity.

For Chinatown businesses interested in a mural, subscribe to our newsletter (sign up at the bottom of this page) for more information. Applications will open Friday, May 22.
