Anti-Asian Racism: What You Can Do to Help

A RISE IN ANTI-ASIAN HATE CRIMES

This time last year, before COVID-19 made its way to NYC, we witnessed xenophobia’s impact on Chinatown, a place of historical and cultural significance for Asian Americans. We founded our organization because anti-Asian sentiments and attacks exposed our community’s vulnerability to discrimination alongside systematic oppression that prevents fair access to resources such as aid and capital. Though anti-Asian sentiments have risen over the past year, they are not new.

A report by the Asian American Bar Association of New York shows hate crimes against Asians in NYC increasing nearly tenfold in 2020, and yet there have been no reported convictions as of February 2021. Zero. And still these racist and violent acts continue to plague our communities all around the country.

An 89 year old woman was set on fire in Brooklyn, NY.
Noel Quintana, 61, was brutally slashed across the face in Manhattan.
…and more in recent weeks, along with the past year, both reported and unreported.

According to Stop AAPI Hate over 2,800 cases of anti-Asian incidents have been self-reported in New York City at the end of 2020. The numbers don’t lie; the most vulnerable members of our communities are being targeted by racists and bigots. These violent acts were exacerbated by ignorance and the inflammatory rhetoric of the past presidential administration, which used hateful terms like “Chinese virus” and “Kung Flu” in reference to the COVID pandemic.

LET OUR VOICES BE HEARD

Activists, public speakers, influencers and celebrities are speaking out against anti-Asian violence, which helped tremendously in garnering much needed media attention in the current news cycle. However, we cannot rely solely on influential star power—change requires each and every one of our voices, and we are asking for solidarity and support from all communities to raise our voices together. We must continue reporting these incidents, to make sure that we protect our elderly, and to ensure justice is served for those who have been victimized. Speak up! Your voice matters!
